Objectives
After reading this issue, the clinician should be able to:
- Assess patients for asthma triggers and educate them on ways to reduce or mitigate those triggers.
- Identify the scope of the problem regarding tobacco use, secondhand smoke and its effects on asthma patients (children, adults, elderly, and pregnant women).
- Cite the prevalence of tobacco use, secondhand smoke, and asthma-related issues among age groups in Pennsylvania.
- Identify patients with asthma and the measures they can take to reduce their risk of exposure to secondhand smoke.
- Assess a patient’s readiness to quit if a smoker and refer to available smoking cessation programs.
