Bill Would Require Insurers to Cover Autism

The Senate Banking and Insurance Committee on April 1, 2008, considered a bill that would require health insurance companies to cover autism spectrum disorders.

Public Welfare Secretary Estelle Richman told the committee that there is no reason why autism should be treated differently than any other disorder. Most insurers deny coverage for autism spectrum disorders, forcing parents to obtain treatment for autistic children through Medical Assistance (Medicaid).

The insurance industry has argued that legislative efforts should be focused on improving programs for autistic children and not on where they get insurance.

House Bill 1150 was unanimously passed by the state House of Representatives on July 14, 2007.

It was sponsored by House Speaker Denny O'Brien (R-Philadelphia), a longtime advocate of legislation and state funding for autism research and treatment.
