Learn More about Running for Public Office, Working in a Political Campaign

If you’re interested in running for public office or want to become involved in a political campaign, you can attend one of two different educational seminars hosted by the American Medical Association Political Action Committee (AMPAC).

For physicians who are interested in running for office, AMPAC will hold an annual candidate workshop on Feb. 18-20, 2011, in Pentagon City, Va. The workshop includes campaign strategy and media advertising training, as well as hands-on public speaking and fundraising sessions. Spouses also are invited to attend.

Physicians who would like to be more active in the political process or volunteer for a medicine-friendly candidate can attend AMPAC’s annual campaign school from April 13-17, 2011, in Pentagon City.

Attendees to the campaign school will: take part in a simulated congressional campaign; attend daily lectures on campaign strategy, media advertising, and political fundraising; and work in teams on nightly exercises like creating a campaign strategy, taping a commercial, and writing a fundraising letter.

Costs for AMA members, except transportation to Virginia, are paid by AMPAC. For more information, visit the AMPAC website or email Jim Wilson, political education programs manager, at jim.wilson@ama-assn.org.
