The Pennsylvania Coalition to Save Antibiotic Strength (PaCSAS), organized in 2002 by the Pennsylvania Medical Society, Pennsylvania health plans and other health care organizations, helps educate Pennsylvanians about the appropriate use of antibiotics and the dangers of antibiotic resistance.
Partnering with the Council for Affordable Quality Healthcare (CAQH) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on the Save Antibiotic Strength initiative, PaCSAS provides physicians and patients with educational materials and programs on using antibiotics wisely.
Highlights of PaCSAS activities To date, some of the Coalition's activities include:
- Collecting approximately $86,500 from participating organizations to support the campaign.
- Publishing a special antibiotic resistance issue of Counter Details and offering continuing medical education (CME) credits.
- Distributing free patient education materials to thousands of physicians, CRNPs, PAs, licensed day care centers/nursery schools, and school nurses throughout the state.
- Implementing a multi-media campaign to emphasize the health risks of overutilization of antibiotics and to reinforce the message with the lay public that antibiotics are not necessary for viral illnesses.
