Join Network to Provide Care for Refugees

Physicians interested in providing care for refugees can join the Pennsylvania Refugee Health Program provider network.

Through the program, physicians provide comprehensive health assessments of new refugees soon after their arrival in the US to protect the public from communicable diseases and improve the health of refugees. Assessments include a medical history, physical exam, immunizations, and screenings for tuberculosis, hepatitis, sexually transmitted diseases, and intestinal parasites.

To participate in the network, physicians will need to complete a participating provider agreement. They then will be reimbursed according to the program’s fee schedule.

Refugees are those who have entered the US legally after leaving their home country because of persecution or fear of persecution. Because they are forced to leave their homes, refugees are at higher risk of health and mental health issues. They also may come from parts of the world with higher rates of disease and different health care systems.

The Pennsylvania Medical Society (PAMED) encourages exploration of issues surrounding refugee health and supports legislation and policies that address their unique health needs. A resolution passed by the PAMED® House of Delegates in 2009 also supports extending the amount of time that refugees can be covered under Medicaid.
