Pennsylvania Bureau of Workers’ Compensation to Hold Provider Trainings

Do you have difficulty receiving timely and correct payments for workers’ compensation services? The Pennsylvania Bureau of Workers’ Compensation will hold free online training sessions this fall to help health care providers better understand workers’ compensation.

If you are involved in the workers’ compensation process, sign up for the provider training session on Oct. 4 or Oct. 6. Topics to be covered include correct billing practices, documentation of charges and payment, denial issues, and the fee review process.

Those involved in the review, repricing, and payment of workers’ compensation medical bills should attend the repricer training session on Sept. 27 or Sept. 29. Topics to be covered include medical billing, the workers’ compensation fee schedule, regulations and payment requirements under the Workers’ Compensation Act, utilization review, and technical issues.

To participate in any of these educational sessions, you must have a computer with Internet access and a valid email address. Preregistration is required. If you have any questions or to register, contact Karla Henneman at khenneman@state.pa.us or (717) 787-3486.

We encourage other practices to tell how they handle this issue. One step you could take is to discuss this with your software vendor and ask the vendor to create a prompt to ensure the question is asked at the initial point of contact by the receptionist/front desk.

We are in the beginning stages of EMR. When our physicians begin putting the codes in EMR and generating a bill, we are finding the patients regular insurance is being billed because either registration did not know the visit was work related or an auto accicent and the physician failed to let the front desk know. I am interested in finding out how other offices handle this. I would hate to refuse the patient treatment if we do not have this information. This causes a big mess especially in EMR.
