Grant Money Available to Implement EHR Systems

Primary care practices and health centers in Pennsylvania are eligible for grants to help pay for electronic health record (EHR) systems.

Aided by the Pennsylvania Medical Society and its subsidiary PMSCO Healthcare Consulting, Quality Insights of Pennsylvania was able to secure $44 million for Pennsylvania. This funding is enough to provide two years of assistance to 8,700 practices through Regional Extension Centers (RECs).

Primary care providers who practice in small practices or community health centers in family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, or obstetrics and gynecology are eligible for the grants. When pre-registering, you will be asked to select the organization with which you would like to work. Consider choosing PMSCO Healthcare Consulting.

Those who have already implemented EHR or who plan to implement EHR can pre-register online for the grants, which are available on a first come, first served basis. Pre-registration is not a legal commitment.

Follow this link if your practice is located in the western counties of Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Bedford, Blair, Butler, Cambria, Cameron, Clarion, Clearfield, Crawford, Elk, Erie, Fayette, Forrest, Greene, Indiana, Jefferson, Lawrence, McKean, Mercer, Potter, Somerset, Venango, Warren, Washington, or Westmoreland. Practices in all other counties should follow this link

The grants are available through the federal government as part of the economic stimulus package passed in 2009.

Implementing EHR will help physicians earn Medicare and Medicaid incentives and avoid payment penalties that will take effect in 2015.

To those with questions about grants for specialists: Specialists are eligible for incentives for implementing EHR. However, the funding for assistance by the REC is mainly directed at primary care physicians. Since this is a national issue, advocacy has been led by the American Medical Association, which has not addressed the issue of specialists receiving grant assistance. Practice Admin: You should be contacted soon by the Regional Extension Center. If you aren't, please contact them directly via their website.

I am a neurologist in solo practice and face going out of business from the cost of an EHR system and implementation. In this area, most small practices are specialists. HELP on our behalf!!!

I signed up for the REACH program* several months ago based on a prompting from (I believe) the Bucks or Montgomery County Medical Society. I haven't heard anything. Should I sign up through this method, too? *Not sure if it had a name at that time. Thanks

I agree.

I think that the stimulus money for EHR should be available to any small practice of any specialty. Did the PMS voice any concern about the exclusions? what do others think?
