Objectives
Physicians participating in this activity should be able to:
Case 1: Improving the Safety of Telephone or Verbal Orders
- Identify examples of contributing factors in medication errors associated with verbal orders.
- Cite safe practices that can reduce the risk of errors with verbal orders.
- Describe the intent of JCAHO’s safety goal on verbal orders.
Case 2: Hydrofluoric Acid Exposure—A Double Whammy That’s Not Just Skin Deep
- Specify the mechanisms by which HF damages tissue
- Identify the symptom that most commonly is indicative of dermal HF exposure
- Describe activities to reduce the risk of HF-associated injuries
Case 3: Demerol: Is It the Best Analgesic?
- Cite common side effects associated with the use of meperidine
- Describe the effects associated with normeperidine accumulation
- Explain meperidine’s analgesic properties compared to other opioid analgesics
